Svenja Dube is an Associate Professor (untenured) of Accountancy at the Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College. She earned her PhD from the Stern School of Business at New York University in 2019. Before her current role at Baruch College, she held a position as an Assistant Professor at Fordham University. Her research focuses on voluntary disclosures and firms' information environment. Personal website

We examine whether shareholders’ demands for CSR (corporate social responsibility) disclosures induce firms to improve their to-be-disclosed real activities. Using CSR disclosure proposals as the setting, we conduct mediation analyses and find that firms’ post-target improvements in CSR disclosures are associated with better subsequent CSR performance, suggestive of spillover effects from shareholder disclosure demands on real activities. Consistent with investor pressure driving these spillover effects, our results concentrate in firms with high dedicated institutional ownership and relatively successful shareholder proposals. We further find that firms improve environmental (social) performance after being targeted by environmental (social) disclosure proposals through the disclosure channel, consistent with improvements in CSR performance ensuing from the respective disclosure demands. Overall, our findings are indicative of the efficacy of private governance, i.e., shareholder disclosure demands motivate firms to take real actions in the absence of disclosure mandates.
