In 2024, Joshua Mills retired after 24 years at Baruch College. He had previously taught for seven years at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and for a decade at N.Y.U.
A proud CUNY graduate, he earned a B.A. and M.A. at City College of New York after graduating from Stuyvesant High School in 1963.
“I’m particularly grateful for the wonderful students with whom I worked,” he said. “Many became superb journalists, and one (only one, so far!) , the late Mike McAlary, won a Pulitzer Prize -- for the New York Daily News in 1998, for reporting on police abuse of immigrants.”
Mills entered journalism in 1966 as a reporter for the Camden (NJ) Courier-Post, was a reporter and rewriteman at the Newark Star Ledger, then joined the Associated Press in 1968. He was the lead reporter that year on AP’s coverage of the student protests and police riot at Columbia University, and in 1969 was the lead reporter at the Woodstock music festival. He subsequently worked as a rewriteman at the New York Post, a columnist at the New York Daily News and then an editor and writer at The New York Times for a decade. His articles have appeared in Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, New York, Esquire, Playboy, Boys’ Life, TV Guide and the Columbia Journalism Review. With Peter Fornatale, he wrote Radio in the Television Age. He also worked as a writer and editor for several radio and television documentaries.
Mills was long involved in training journalists, with the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism, the Dow Jones News Fund and as the U.S. director of the Bertelsmann Summer Academy, a training program for German business journalists. He served on the boards of SABEW and the New York Financial Writers Association.
