After completing military service and receiving my MBA at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, I began my public-accounting career with Price Waterhouse & Co. in Washington, DC. As a CPA, I later moved to New York City, with partnerships in several accounting firms, before retiring from EisnerAmper LLP.
Teaching accounting and auditing has long been a part-time element of my career. While my “day job” with public-accounting firms was principally as an accounting consultant and an auditor of clients’ financial statements (as well as providing assistance to attorneys as a consultant and expert witness, as part of the firms' Litigation Support practices), I began as an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, continuing later as an adjunct faculty member for undergraduate and graduate students at Pace University, New York University, and Baruch College.
In addition, I oversaw my firms’ continuing education programs for partners and staff, both designing and teaching courses on a variety of accounting, auditing, and financial-reporting topics. As a guest lecturer, I also designed and presented accounting courses for several New York City law firms and for my firms’ clients in Paris and Vienna, as well as for representatives of the financial press at Columbia University.
The wide range of today’s practice of public accounting resulted in my testifying on accounting and auditing matters in federal and state courts of law and in writing articles for accounting publications and in-house newsletters. I also wrote – and update annually – the “Attorney’s Handbook of Accounting, Auditing and Financial Reporting,” loose-leaf, published by LexisNexis / Matthew Bender.
I have long been involved with administrative and support activities for the accounting profession. I have served on (and chaired) various boards and committees of the American Institute of CPAs and the New York State Society of CPAs. I recently completed my term as chair of the New York State Board for Public Accountancy (which oversees the practice of public accounting in New York, as directed by the New York State Education Department) and am a continuing member of that Board.
After 30-odd years of service as Board member, Treasurer, and committee chair, I am an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees of the City & Country School in New York (with continuing membership on its audit and finance committees). After completing Board membership, I continue as an advisor to the Audit and Compliance Committee of The New Jewish Home.
In August 2022, I became a full-time lecturer in the Zicklin School of Business / Baruch College’s Stan Ross Department of Accountancy, after joining Baruch as an adjunct lecturer in 1992. I currently teach Intermediate Accounting classes principally at the undergraduate level.
