Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers. The CLS Program offers fully-funded summer language institutes for U.S. university students and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The program provides intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Undergraduates, master's and doctoral level students of diverse majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply for the seven to ten week programs.

Award / Eligibility Details:

Current undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of general college course work and be 18 by the program start date.
