OPERA? OPERA WHAT? WHAT IS THIS? IS THIS OPERA? — [*This opera*] This work [*knots*]
binds operatic practices with elements from old and new media (e.g., TV, YouTube)
into a chain of [*preposterous*] ludicrous [*events*] episodes. Disparate pieces [*with*] of
text—original or [*appropriated*] quoted—generate [*symbols*] characters and situations
on the border between the mundane and the absurd. #PostOpera #KnowYourMeme
#FunnyCats
Knot an Opera is quite literally not an opera. It’s a series of non-linear sketches that are weaved together (or knotted, if you will) with musical and dramatic material. Knot An Opera! challenges the operatic community to innovate and rethink how opera is constructed and presented in the twenty-first century. The piece addresses technology and its place in society. The opera presents a hard evaluation of the importance of digital existence through social media – the piece itself is constructed in a way that is sort of reminiscent of how people rapidly consume content that an algorithm’s chosen for you, like how YouTube suggests another video to watch after you’ve finished what you’re currently watching.
