Event Description:
The Uneven Results of Diversity Management
Firms have devised several broadly different approaches to promoting workforce diversity, under principles of meritocratic bureaucracy, affirmative action, network development, and remedying cognitive bias. Have these different approaches to promoting equality of opportunity, and diversity in the workforce, actually improved the chances of women and members of minority groups?

Using data on over 800 firms for more than 30 years, we show that some of the most popular approaches to promoting diversity have been ineffective. Meanwhile, some of the lesser known, and less popular, strategies have been quite effective. Public policy might be reoriented to the promotion of effective interventions.

Frank Dobbin is professor of sociology at Harvard. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, and taught for fifteen years at Princeton before moving to Harvard in 2003. His Inventing Equal Opportunity (Princeton University Press, 2009), which won the 2010 Max Weber Award from the American Sociological Association, charts how corporate human resources professionals have defined discrimination under the Civil Rights Act. He is currently developing an evidence-based approach to diversity management, studying both the effects of corporate diversity programs on actual workforce diversity, and the effects of workforce diversity on corporate performance.
