"Addictively, almost obsessively intimate" - The New York Times
A hit Israeli television series about a Haredi family in Jerusalem. Shulem Shtisel is the father of a large family and each of his children has ‘tsuris’—problems. His daughter, Gitti, is secretly dealing with devastating marital issues; his older son, Zvi Aryeh, feels professionally discontent; he is estranged from one daughter who married an Orthodox Jew from a different sect; and his youngest son, and star of the show, Akiva, aspires to be an artist, a profession deemed deeply problematic. A discussion with Prof. Samuel C. Heilman (Queens College) will follow the screening of two episodes.
Speaker Bio: Samuel C. Heilman is a professor of Sociology at Queens College of the City University of New York who focuses on social ethnography of contemporary Jewish Orthodox movements. He was awarded the highest university rank of Distinguished Professor by CUNY and won the Marshall Sklare Memorial Award for his lifetime of scholarship from the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry. He is the Harold Proshansky Chair in Jewish Studies at the Graduate Center, and also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Jewry, the premiere scholarly journal on the social scientific study of Jewry. Recently he published The Rebbe: The Life and Afterlife of Menachem Mendel Schneerson, co-authored with Menachem Friedman (Princeton, 2010), which won the National Jewish Book Award. In addition, Professor Heilman gave the keynote address at the Bar-Ilan University Conference on Cultural Vitality and Jewish Education. This past year he did an extensive interview on Religion and Ethics with PBS, focusing on the difficulties of leaving the ultra- Orthodox Jewish community.
