Sara Kandler has worked for many years as a journalist, writing about both global and local issues. After graduating with an M.A. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in the mid-1990s, she worked at Thomson Financial, producing a weekly newsletter on the emerging debt markets. She covered this niche – the trading of the sovereign and corporate debt of developing countries -- from many angles, including that of Wall Street, international financial institutions such as the I.M.F. and World Bank, and the governments of emerging economies.

Kandler has also written about local news, education, parenting and health for various venues including Columbia University Medical Center, Barnesandnoble.com, Patch.com, Westchester.com and Brooklyn Bridge magazine.

Her other passion is teaching. She earned an M.A. in Teaching at Manhattanville College and an E.S.L. certificate, and has taught secondary-level English and French at several independent schools in New York and Rabat, Morocco. She is particularly interested in the personal essay and has worked with many students on crafting their college application essays. With a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Brown University and many years of devouring long-form journalism, Kandler is very excited to explore the intersection of nonfiction and literary expression.
