    SACC tutor and student

SACC hires Baruch undergraduates to serve as peer tutors and members of the front desk staff.  Beginning the Fall 2023 semester, Zicklin graduate students can also apply for tutoring positions for graduate business courses.  Although SACC accepts applications year-round for all disciplines, interviews generally take place only in mid-August and mid-January.  Interviews may also take place in early June, depending on staffing needs.  Please check this page for priority application deadlines.

Hiring for the Spring 2025 semester is now complete.  If you would like to apply for the Fall 2025 semester, please email your application materials to sacc@baruch.cuny.edu by Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Interviews will be conducted from Tuesday, August 12, 2025 to Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

    What do SACC Tutors Do?

SACC tutors complete a nationally-certified tutor training program and may work in one or more of the following roles:

    • Small group tutoring & one-on-one tutoring
    • Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL). PLTL leaders work with a group of 5-10 students once a week for the entire semester leading hands-on practice sessions for MTH 1023 (Intermediate & College Algebra).
    • Recitation Leaders (Precalculus): Recitation leaders work with a class of up to 30 students once a week for the entire semester leading recitation sessions consisting of review and hands-on practice.
    • Recitation Leaders (Algebra): In the summer math immersion program for newly admitted Baruch students, tutors work as recitation leaders for immersion courses in various levels of algebra.
    • Final Exam Reviews: Tutors work with students in groups of various sizes reviewing concepts and doing problems from practice exams and review sheets.
    • Weekly Workshops: Using existing workshop lesson plans or new ones they develop, tutors conduct weekly workshops that are one to two hours in duration. Subject areas include accounting, economics, finance, SAM projects, and others.

SACC services are available both on campus and online.  New tutors should expect to work on campus for at least a full semester and may request to be trained in a subsequent semester to do some of their hours online.

    How are SACC Tutors Compensated?

SACC tutors start at a pay rate of $19.12 per hour.  Tutors work between 5 and 15 hours per week.  For some roles, such as recitation and workshops leaders, extra pay is provided for prep time.  Tutors are also paid to attend meetings and training.

    Tutor Eligibility

To be eligible to become an undergraduate tutor you must:

    • Have completed 24 local credits (credits earned at Baruch).  Student that received an A or A- in MTH 1023, MTH 2003, or MTH 2009 can apply with fewer than 24 local credits.
    • Have a GPA of at least 3.3
    • Have earned a grade of A or A- in each subject you would like to tutor
    • Be available to work at least 5 hours per week consistently throughout the semester
    • Be available to participate in mandatory tutor training and staff meetings
    • Be willing and able to tutor algebra by your second semester of work (see ETA, below)

To be eligible to become a Zicklin graduate tutor you must:

    • Have completed at least one semester of graduate study at Baruch
    • Have a GPA of at least 3.3
    • Have earned a grade of A or A- in each subject you would like to tutor
    • Be available to work at least 5 hours per week consistently throughout the semester
    • Be available to participate in mandatory tutor training and staff meetings
    ETA: Everybody Tutors Algebra

Although SACC provides academic support in a wide array of subject areas, support for students taking algebra is one of our greatest areas of focus.  SACC tutors support students studying elementary, intermediate, and college algebra by:

    • Serving as peer leaders in the Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) program that provides embedded support for MTH 1023
    • Providing individual and group tutoring for students taking MTH 1023 and MTH 1030
    • Leading final exam reviews for students taking MTH 1023 and MTH 1030
    • Working as teaching assistants in the summer math immersion program

It has been a long-standing SACC policy that tutors hired to cover precalculus and calculus must be prepared to tutor algebra by the beginning of their second semester of work.  Changes to the curricular requirements in the Zicklin School of Business have compelled us to expand this “Everybody Tutors Algebra” policy beyond the math tutoring staff to include tutors hired in all subject areas.  In addition to the other courses they cover, new undergraduate tutors in all subject areas are expected to participate in a guided review of algebra topics during their first semester of work and to be prepared to assist students with algebra by their second semester of work.  Applicants whose majors require either pre-calculus or statistics (or whose major requirements have pre-calculus or statistics as prerequisites) are subject to this requirement.  There are a limited number of majors in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences that require neither pre-calculus nor statistics.  Applicants majoring in these areas may request exemption from the ETA policy during the interview.

    How to Apply
    • A complete application consists of the application form and one faculty recommendation.
    • Applicants should complete the application form and email it as a file attachment (PDF or JPEG) from their Baruch student email address to sacc@baruch.cuny.edu.
    • Your recommendation must be from an instructor you had for a course you plan to tutor. Faculty should submit recommendations via email from their Baruch faculty email address directly to sacc@baruch.cuny.edu.
    Language Tutors

If you are fluent in one of the modern languages taught at Baruch (for example, if you are a native speaker) and you have not completed coursework in that language at Baruch, you may request evaluation by the faculty of the Department of Modern Languages and submit a faculty recommendation from the professor who evaluates you.

    Front Desk Staff

If you are interested in becoming a member of the front desk staff, you must be available to work at least 5 hours per week.   Please be sure to submit a faculty recommendation with your application when applying for the front desk position.
