The data on this page was produced for the National Map project by the USGS. The National Map was discontinued in Sept 2014 due to budget cuts. These layers were archived in data.gov, but the government silently removed them sometime during 2017. We are providing them here in their original, unaltered form.

Each shapefile has county-level U.S. presidential general election results that the USGS gathered from state agencies. Data for 2004 and 2008 is stored in single-part geometry using 2000 census geography as its base. Data from 2012 is stored in multi-part geometry using 2010 census geography. The CRS for all files is NAD83. The data is suitable for thematic mapping at the national level and for large regional areas. CSV files are available for users who are not interested in mapping but just want the data.

We do not NOT have data for 2016 and it seems unlikely that the federal government will produce it any time soon. There are a number of projects that have scraped and aggregated the data from media sources.
