Join Baruch's MA in Arts Administration program at the Mishkin Gallery on May 4 for the last
Arts Admin Redux event of the spring! This intimate lecture series provides our alumni, students, and faculty an opportunity to engage with arts leaders – and each other – in person on campus.
This event will feature art critic, curator and editor
Tobi Maier, discussing the comparative geographies and scale of the work he's done both within and beyond institutions in New York, Lisbon, Frankfurt, and São Paulo.
Tobi Maier is an art critic, curator and editor. He directed Lisbon’s Municipal Galleries between February 2019 and December 2022. Previously he organized the exhibition space SOLO SHOWS (2015-2018) together with the artist Leandro Nerefuh from an apartment in downtown São Paulo. He served as associate curator to Luis Pérez-Oramas for the 30th edition of the Bienal de São Paulo (2012), which featured 111 artists and included a number of exhibitions in historical architectures around the megalopolis as well as a 100 day live radio station. Between 2008 and 2011 and together with the directors of Kunstverein München, European Kunsthalle Cologne and the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart he developed the programs for Ludlow 38 in New York and subsequently transformed the institution into a curatorial residency of Goethe-Institut New York. Under the directorship of Chus Martínez, Tobi served as curator at Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt am Main (2006–2008), one of the oldest membership not-for-profit Kunstverein in Germany. Tobi Maier holds a BA (Hons) Arts Management from London South Bank University, a MA Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London and completed PhD research in the department of Poéticas Visuais at the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo. He has contributed to a variety of journals including Artforum, ArtReview, Flash Art, Frieze, OEI and Texte zur Kunst. Touching upon these different experiences, Tobi will discuss different models of arts administration that have impacted upon his work as a curator, director and editor.
