Conference Description

The conference explores the benefits and obstacles of providing more participation with the arts for college students, faculty and their academic communities.  Arts and cultural organizations are continually exploring ways to engage the public, in particular, younger audiences who are the next generation of patrons and supporters of the arts.  Both communities – higher education and the arts – share a common goal; to enrich and expand student arts engagement, as illustrated by dynamic collaborations between colleges/universities and arts organizations, such as museums and theatre companies.  There is a growing awareness that exposure to the arts, particularly for students from lower income families, helps students develop character, leadership skills, an appreciation of cultural competence and diversity, as well as a sense of self, empathy, creativity, ethical values, and social responsibility.

The 2014 Conference brings together professionals from the arts, cultural institutions, and higher education to share ideas and develop strategies for empowering students through innovative programs that engage the arts. The two-day conference will be organized around four themes.

Conference Themes

I. Increasing Faculty and Student Engagement and Participation: How can arts and educational institutions collaborate to provide meaningful experiences for faculty and students that change their understanding of themselves and the communities they live in? What are the current barriers, as well as incentives, for faculty to increase the role of the arts in college curricula?

II. Financing and Supporting Collaborative Partnerships: What are the benefits of higher education and arts institutions partnerships? What are the costs, measured in terms of staff commitment and dollars, required of each partner to make the collaboration work? What narratives are effective in attracting external support for these efforts from foundations, government agencies, and corporate and individual donors?

III. Effective Communication Strategies: How can institutional partners promote and share ideas and experiences to increase student engagement with the arts, e.g. through open source websites such as and What are effective communication strategies for changing the cultural and current paradigm for incorporating the arts into students' educational experiences?  

IV. Assessing Impact on Academic Communities and Art Institutions: How do we evaluate collaborative programs to assess impact? What metrics do we use to measure outcomes? Is the investment of time, money and creative energy worth the results?

The film follows Ruhi Singh, a small-town girl competing in Bombay to win the Miss India Pageant and Prachi Trivedi, a young militant leader of a fundamentalist Hindu camp for girls, where she preaches violent resistance to Western culture.

Grants for Graduate Study in any discipline at universities in the UK or Ireland

We will explore the outstanding funding opportunities to pursue a graduate degree in England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland through the Rhodes scholarship, the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship and the Mitchell Scholarship. The session will review the purpose, criteria and application process for each of these awards and will discuss strategies on how to be a competitive applicant.

Sophomores and Juniors with a demonstrated record of academic achievement, leadership, communities service and character are strongly encouraged to consider applying this year for study beginning in the 2015 -16 academic year.

Dr. Greg Grandin will present: "Who Aint A Slave" Herman Melville's Paradox of Freedom and Slavery in the Americas. This is part of The Paul André Feit Memorial Lectures Series.


The author of a number of prize-winning books, including most recently Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City (Metropolitan 2009). A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History, as well as for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Fordlandia was picked by the New York Times, New Yorker, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and NPR for their “best of” lists, and named it the best history book of 2009. 

Grandin is also the author of Empire’s Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Empire (Metropolitan 2005), The Last Colonial Massacre: Latin America During the Cold War (University of Chicago Press 2004), and Blood of Guatemala: A History of Race and Nation (Duke University Press, 2000), which won the Latin American Studies Association’s Bryce Wood Award for the best book published on Latin America in any discipline. With Gil Joseph, is edited A Century of Revolution, also published by Duke University Press.

A professor of history at NYU and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Grandin writes on US foreign policy, Latin America, genocide, and human rights. He has published in The New York Times, Harper’s, The London Review of Books, The Nation, The Boston Review, The Los Angeles Times, and The American Historical Review. He has been a frequent guest on Democracy Now! and has appeared on The Charlie Rose Show. Grandin also served as a consultant to the United Nations truth commission on Guatemala and has been the recipient of a number of prestigious fellowships, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.

The guest speaker will talk about the definition/brief history of genocides in general, international law/norms (R2P) the failure of preventing the Rwandan genocide, the role of mass media. Additionally, the speaker will mention the genocides that are taking place today.

A tub, a scarf, a stool and a naked woman:  monologue, mystery, and a live fine art modeling session; this fast-paced solo work asks “What are the stories we tell about artists (Modigliani, Picasso, and Bonnard) and their muses?”  This is the winner of Best Production at the Prague Fringe Festival that says “keeps us hooked” and he believed “every moment as something happening, rather than something being performed… This speaks highly to organic and seamless fusion between text and performance.”


Star Harmony Stempel is the winner of the Excellence in Solo Performance Award from the 2013 FringeNYC Festival.

9:15 PM - 10:00 PM BigData and Analytics: Computational Trends and Challenges
Speaker: Jaime Moreno, IBM Research

After a brief introduction about IBM Research, this lecture gives a perspective on the ongoing evolution in computing arising from the trends in Big Data and Analytics, and the expectations regarding future systems for them. From the realization that microelectronic technology is no longer improving performance at historic rates, plus the continuously increasing demand for computing performance arising from Big Data and Analytics, computer systems need to evolve to adapt to the ever increasing requirements. This lecture shows how we are undergoing an evolution towards new forms of computing.  Moving data has become as expensive as performing basic computations, leading to the emergence of “data centric computing systems”. The "calculating" computing paradigm in place for the last decades, which replaced the earlier "tabulating" computing paradigm, is now starting to transition into a "cognitive" style of computing. These transitions are ushering an entirely new set of challenges to the design and use of computer systems.

Jaime H. Moreno is Senior Manager, Microprocessor Architecture, at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York. His department research activities include advanced systems architecture, systems technology and architecture interactions, and advanced compiler technology, efforts that address the full range of IBM processors and systems. In addition to multiple publications and co-authoring two books, Jaime holds 17 patents in processor architecture, and has been recognized as Master Inventor at IBM Research. Jaime joined IBM in 1992; previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Concepcion, Chile. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from UCLA in 1989.
