About the Program

Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity for a fireside chat with Mark Martinelli, EVP and Chief Audit Executive of Synchrony and Professor Paquita Y. Davis-Friday, Senior Associate Dean in the Zicklin School of Business. Mr. Martinelli will detail his professional journey and draw upon his experiences to highlight the importance of establishing a moral compass early in one’s career and using it to navigate decision making. Mr. Martinelli and Professor Davis-Friday will discuss how leaders can develop a workplace that operates with integrity and fosters a corporate culture that values ethics. 



Mark Martinelli, EVP and Chief Audit Executive, Synchrony

Mark Martinelli is EVP and Chief Audit Executive of Synchrony, one of the nation’s premier consumer financial services companies.

Mark leads Synchrony’s internal audit function, which he built after the company’s IPO separation from GE in 2014. Mark oversees audit practices for risk, compliance, finance, operations and technology. Mark has leveraged the innovative use of automation, data analytics and other technology to proactively help the company stay ahead of risks.

Prior to Synchrony, Mark had a twenty-year career at HSBC where he was SEVP and Chief Auditor for North America. Prior to that he was President and Chief Executive Officer of and its Chief Financial Officer. Mark held executive positions in Finance, Strategy, Planning and Audit. 

Prior to joining HSBC, he was a Senior Manager with KPMG LLP. Mark kas been an Adjunct Professor at Baruch College. He served on the Audit Committee of New York Clearing House and was its Chairman from 2011 to 2013.

A certified public accountant, Mark is a chartered global management accountant and a certified anti-money laundering specialist. He serves as a director on both the Baruch College Fund Board of Trustees and its Audit Committee. Mark is a member of New York State Society of CPA’s Internal Audit Committee and served as its the Chairman from 2018 – 2020. He also serves on the NYSSCPA Future of Accounting Education Committee.

Mark is often a featured industry speaker on banking, accounting and auditing matters and serves on the CPA Journal Review Board.

Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. John’s University where he serves on the Dept. of Accounting Executive Advisory Board.


Prof. Paquita Y. Davis-Friday, Senior Associate Dean in the Zicklin School of Business and Professor in the Stan Ross Department of Accountancy, Baruch College

Paquita Y. Davis-Friday is the Senior Associate Dean in the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College and a professor in the Stan Ross Department of Accountancy. She was the Executive Director of Graduate Programs in the Zicklin School from April 2013 until December 2017. She earned her Ph.D. in accounting at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where her dissertation received the 1997 Outstanding International Accounting Dissertation Award from the American Accounting Association. Before entering the Ph.D. program, she worked as an auditor for Deloitte in Detroit and as a tax accountant for Deloitte in Ann Arbor and was certified in 1992 by the State of Michigan as a public accountant.

Prof. Davis-Friday has taught principles of financial accounting, intermediate accounting and auditing to undergraduate students, financial reporting to MBA students and an international accounting research seminar to doctoral students. Her primary research interests are executive compensation and pensions and as a member of the American Accounting Association’s Financial Accounting Standards Committee, Dr. Davis-Friday was a principal author of the Committee’s responses to the FASB’s Exposure Drafts on Share-Based Payments and Pensions.

Prof. Davis-Friday is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Pollyanna Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping institutions achieve their diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
