Waiting for Godot for the Climate Crisis Generation
A dark comedy, set in a disturbingly
not-so-distant future. Years after a conflict known as the Big War, a tiny
kingdom jutting out of the sea wrestles with the problems of forming a
nation—and opposing notions of what it means to be a citizen, a country, and a
civilization. Inspired by actual events.
In 1960’s Britain, a retired WWII army major claimed an abandoned aircraft platform in international waters off the coast of Essex as his own sovereign nation, planted his flag, and coined a motto, E Mare Libertas! (From the Sea, Freedom!). Originally a commission for the Royal Court Theatre, the premiere venue for new writing in the UK.
About The COOP: Founded by Kate Hamill (Sense & Sensibility, Vanity Fair, Little Women, etc.), Andrus Nichols (Bedlam’s Saint Joan, Sense & Sensibility, etc.) and other artists, The COOP was conceived out of the desire to create a NYC-based community that makes extraordinary theatre and is committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, experimentation, and trust. The COOP produces both new plays that resonate with timeless themes and universal truths, and old plays reinvigorated through a new lens.
