A pioneer in the high-fidelity industry, Dr. Harman founded Harman/Kardon, Inc. in 1953. Harman/Kardon has grown over the years into Harman International Industries, an S&P 500 company.
From 1970 to 1973, he was president of Friends World College, a worldwide experimental Quaker college. He founded the Program on Technology, Public Policy and Human Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Dr. Harman is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees at the Aspen Institute, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Business Executives for National Security (BENS), trustee emeritus of the Carter Center, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Freedom House.
He is the co-author, with Daniel Yankelovich, of Starting With the People, published by Houghton Mifflin in June 1988, and the author of Mind Your Own Business, published by Currency/Doubleday in October 2003.
“I celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Harman Writer-in-Residence program. I regard it as the single most creative impulse in my life and I do so because the arts should not be treated as decoration, as some extra-curricular activity. They should be intrinsic and organic in the developing life of a creative business person. That is what our Writer-in-Residence program encourages.”
