12:45 PM - 2:00 PM Business in a Climate-Compatible World
Join Us for the Second Seminar in the Spring 2016 Baruch Climate Change Series

This Free program in room 14-280 is Open To The Public, and is sponsored by the Provost's Faculty Research Seminar

Edward Cameron, PhD, Managing Director, Business for Social Responsibility

Dr. Edward Cameron is a specialist in climate change and human rights with 20 years of professional experience working with national governments, international development agencies, global think tanks and with some of the world’s most recognized companies. Edward is Managing Director at BSR, a global non-profit that works with 270 multinational corporations to achieve a just and sustainable world. He leads BSR’s climate practice with the twin goals of driving aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reductions commensurate with holding global mean temperature rises to less than 2C above pre-industrial levels; and enhancing the adaptive capacity of business and society in the face of inevitable climate impacts.

He also serves as Policy Director for the We Mean Business Coalition, an unprecedented alliance of seven business-facing networks driving private sector engagement with global climate change policy. Edward has previously served with the World Resources Institute and the World Bank during six years in Washington, DC; has been a Senior Advisor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives; and spent nine years working in Brussels with the European Union. He holds a PhD in Social Science, Economics and Business and has earned degrees in Ireland, Belgium and Finland.

Climate change poses significant and accelerating material risks for business and society. Growing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere lead to global mean temperature rises and associated growth in a range of hazards including extreme weather events, changes in water patterns, sea-level rises, and acidification of the oceans. This in turn exacerbates risks to business and society by threatening natural resources, undermining ecosystem services, destroying livelihoods and homes, and  damaging vital infrastructure. On the other hand recent global policy responses to climate change, notably the signing of the landmark Paris Agreement in December, are creating new market opportunities worth trillions of dollars for businesses willing to adopt climate compatible products, services, and operations.

This talk will look at both the risks of climate change and how our collective response to this risk can catalyze a thriving clean economy. Edward Cameron will speak about the growing volume of action and ambition in the private sector to understand risk and build climate resilience and will explore how the Paris Agreement dramatically changes the landscape for businesses operating in an increasingly globalized economy.

A tub, a scarf, a stool and a naked woman:  monologue, mystery, and a live fine art modeling session; this fast-paced solo work asks “What are the stories we tell about artists (Modigliani, Picasso, and Bonnard) and their muses?”  This is the winner of Best Production at the Prague Fringe Festival that NYTheaterReview.com says “keeps us hooked” and he believed “every moment as something happening, rather than something being performed… This speaks highly to organic and seamless fusion between text and performance.”

Star Harmony Stempel is the winner of the Excellence in Solo Performance Award from the 2013 FringeNYC Festival.
