Due to a broken immigration system, over two million out of the nation’s eleven million undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States since childhood have grown-up to uncertain futures.

Mining the results of a 12-year study of 150 undocumented young adults in Los Angeles, Professor Gonzales’s book, Lives in Limbo, sheds light on the disastrous effects immigration policies have on their coming of age experiences. Much of this changed in 2012 When President Obama announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. To date, more than 750,000 young people now have access to work authorization, temporary social security numbers, and stays of deportation. However, as we approach the program’s 5-year mark, many questions remain. What is the future of DACA beneficiaries under the new presidential administration? And what will happen to those not included in DACA?

Professor Gonzales, o
ne of the nation’s leading experts on undocumented immigrant youth and young adults, will discuss the impact of immigration policy as it relates to these young people and their families, as well as their social and educational prospects in our country.

The TRU Voices Reading Series will also be cast at this event. A tub, a scarf, a stool and a naked woman:  monologue, mystery, and a live fine art modeling session; this fast-paced solo work asks “What are the stories we tell about artists (Modigliani, Picasso, and Bonnard) and their muses?”  This is the winner of Best Production at the Prague Fringe Festival that NYTheaterReview.com says “keeps us hooked” and he believed “every moment as something happening, rather than something being performed… This speaks highly to organic and seamless fusion between text and performance.”

 

Star Harmony Stempel is the winner of the Excellence in Solo Performance Award from the 2013 FringeNYC Festival.
