The Velveteen Quartet’s objective is to present repertoire in highly sophisticated, well thought out programming--from the more obscure catalog. That means you're less likely to hear us perform string quartets by Beethoven and Brahms, and more likely to hear quartets from the equally genius Albrechtsberger and Zemlinsky--virtual musical obscurities.
And who are these unknown composers? The ensemble says, “Contrary to initial assumptions, they are no less brilliant and innovative than their more famous counterparts. But society has a funny way of affecting history: circumstances sometimes prevent the finest voices in music from flourishing into prominence. Over the centuries many have become virtually unknown, or, if known at all, they are known for an errant piece or two that caught on in one part of the wider repertoire or another. They're often erroneously considered inferior composers--a grave injustice. Whether war, poverty, racism, lack of clout or influence, or plain bad luck, caught these composers in their difficult net, we, as conscientious scholars can finally bring them back to the fore by sharing their music with a greater audience. We want to give those composers a new lease on life by giving excellent, well organized renditions of their music. It is the mission of the Velveteen Quartet to create and execute a renaissance of the music of these composers."
