The life of the Buddha in his own words - the evolution of his thought, his triumphs, and the rarely portrayed tragedy at the end of his life. The Buddha, who has inspired millions of people worldwide for 25 centuries, lived in Northern India around 500BC where he introduced his special teachings and philosophies. Approximately 300 years after his death, an extensive oral history of the movement was written in Asia. Known as the Pali Canon, it became the taproot of the entire Buddhist tradition. It's no dry tale – the Buddha's life stands among the great archetypal adventure stories, and he used his own life as a model for our spiritual struggles. Framed in a most unusual and personal dramatic context, The Buddha Play brings to the stage these authentic texts to enact the extraordinary life of the man, start to finish, in a raw, climactic and suspenseful telling of a tale that can literally change your entire life. After premiering in Boston to critical acclaim and sold-out houses, this one-man show makes its New York debut in a limited-run engagement. (Running time 90 minutes with a brief intermission.)

The Boston Globe said, “…in Brenner's hands they become poignant, amusing, revealing moments in the life of a man whose teachings may be more than 2,000 years old but, in Brenner's telling, become remarkably contemporary.”

The Boston Herald called the show “an entirely egoless production. What could have easily been a grand, self-exalting vehicle is subdued and humble, a gentle but persistent whisper.”
