Uniquely NYC
River to River Festival
The River to River Festival is an annual event held in June in Lower
Manhattan lasting around 10 days. This festival was founded after the
9/11 incident to revitalize and celebrate unique characteristics of New
York City with displays of history, art, and culturally diverse
entertainment. The festival is open to the general public and has many
free cultural, artistic, and fun performances, exhibitions, and
entertainment such as: music, dance, visual arts, plays, poetry, films,
and other art-related events.
After the 9/11 attacks on World Trade Center's Twin Towers, fear and
alertness was instilled in minds of many for a period of time,
especially in Lower Manhattan. Many organizations were looking for ways
to bring life back to the city and to provide New Yorkers with security,
assurance, and unity. This is when the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
(LMCC), the Downtown Alliance, the Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey, South Street Seaport, Battery City Authority, partnered with
Arts Brookfield and American Express, gathered together to create the
River to River Festival in 2002. In 2011, the Lower Manhattan Cultural
Council (LMCC) became the lead producer and organizer of the festival.
New and well-known artists from New York and all around the world come
to this festival to perform and express themselves. This is a fun event
for attendees to bring their friends and family to celebrate the joys
New York City has to offer in the summer heat.
