Uniquely NYC
Fleet Week
Since 1984, Fleet Week New York has been one of the best traditions in
NYC for celebration of the sea services. The Memorial Day commemoration
is a highlight of the week's festivities. The event, honoring the U.S.
Navy and Marine Corps, includes dozens of military demonstrations and
displays throughout the week.
A number of activities take place at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space
Museum, the official hub of Fleet Week. It features military aircraft
fly over, a ceremonial wreath laying, the playing of Taps and a
three-volley rifle salute in honor of those who lost their lives in
service to the United States.
This annual event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of NYC
and the surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast
Guardsmen, as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of
today's Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team.
The heart of Fleet Week is the ship tours. The most popular tour ship,
the USS Iwo Jima, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, is a returning
guest of Fleet Week and always a crowd favorite.
Unfortunately, due to Federal budget cuts, NYC Fleet Week was cancelled
in 2013. The Fleet Week tradition returned in 2014.
