The World's Fair Globe
The Unisphere is one of Queen's most iconic and long-lasting symbols and the world's largest global structure. It is spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth, 12-story high weighing 350 tons located in Flushing Meadow Corona Park in Queens. Commissioned to celebrate the beginning of the space age, it was built to celebrate the 1964-1965 New York World's Fairs and its broad theme "Peace through Understanding". It was initially designed by architect Gilmore D. Clarke, industrial designers at Peter Muller-Munk Associates, and was engineered and fabricated by American Bridge, a division of U.S. Steel. Three huge orbits surrounding the statue represent the tracks of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, and Telstar, the first active communications satellite. In 1995, the Unisphere earned official landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
