SoHo Sidewalk Subway Map
Situated on Greene Street in Soho between Spring and Prince street, there is a patch of pavement with a map of the subway system carved into the sidewalk stretching 87 feet long and 12 feet wide. The piece titled "Subway Map Floating on a NYC Sidewalk" was created by Belgian artist Francoise Schein in 1985. The project was sponsored by Goldman Properties and estimated to cost around $30,000 to produce. It won the City Art Commission award for the best art project of the year. The piece is composed of concrete rods along with LED lights for each subway stop. Each LED light is embedded in the ceilings of adjacent buildings' basements and glows at night. The LEDs show signs that it has been color coded at one time.
