Maiden Lane Sidewalk Clock
At the intersection of Broadway and Maiden Lane, there is a clock embedded deep into the sidewalk that has been working for more than a century. The original clock was designed and installed by William Barthman in 1899. Barthman owned a thriving Jewelry business that has survived to this day, and the clock was designed to advertise for his shop. Barthman and one of his employees, Frank Homm worked on the design and installation of the clock for over two years. Frank Homm was the only person who knew how to maintain the clock, so when he passed away unexpectedly, the clock stopped working. The vibrations from traffic and pedestrian traffic subjected the clock to constant stress, resulting in its deterioration, and its constant need for maintenance. Embarrassed that the clock was not could not be fixed Barthman covered it up with a piece of cardboard for some time.
It was around 1940s that it was replaced completely by a traditional and functioning clock. The Barthhman jewelry store still stands a few doors down from the clock. The clock itself is has a rich history: It survived juvenile vandals, The Great Depression, the September 11th attacks, and Hurricane Sandy.
