Marble Cemetery
The marble cemetery is located in Manhattan's East Village neighborhood, behind the Bowery hotel. Between 1830 and 1937, approximately 2,080 people have been interred at this cemetery, making it the oldest public, non-sectarian cemetery in New York City. The walls surrounding the premises have plaques with the names of the original owners; as a result, there are no gravestones to be seen. Underneath the burial ground there are 156 vaults made of solid white Tuckahoe marble. The Marble Cemetery is often confused with the New York City Marble Cemetery which is located around the corner; both locations, although unrelated, are New York City landmarks.
The Marble Cemetery is open to visitors April through October, usually between 12 to 4pm on the fourth Sunday of the aforementioned months. The Cemetery grounds are also available for rental for private parties or for filming and photo shoots.
