  • A core curriculum focused on leadership and management in public, non-profit and commercial arts organizations.  Students will develop competence in finance, resource development, marketing, entertainment law, arts education and outreach, public policy, and advocacy, and they will meet with a wide range of artists, arts professionals, and civic leaders.
  • Electives that encourage students to deepen their knowledge in particular fields: among them, theatre; orchestra and museum management; artist representation; and arts education. Students in the AA program may, with the permission of the Director, include in their coursework as many as two alternative elective Baruch graduate courses of relevance to their program.
  • Internships that offer significant responsibilities and engaged mentors.
  • A consultancy in the final semester with an arts organization, leading to a thesis or case study published online for use by future students and by practitioners in the field.

Program Learning Goals

Upon completion of an MA in Arts Administration, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the political, social, technological and economic contexts in the field of arts administration.
  2. Connect theory to practice in arts management through class projects with outside organizations, guest lectures from arts administrators, internships in national and international organizations, and a final Consultancy for either a national or international organization.
  3. Prepare the next generation of arts leaders to face the unique opportunities, challenges, and threats facing the arts and culture industry in the 21st century, particularly in areas of cultural competency.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly in written and spoken word about the business and context of the arts.
  5. Demonstrate a preparedness  to meet the needs of arts and cultural organizations in New York City, the NYC Metropolitan Region and the State of New York.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding an applicability of policy for arts organizations particularly within the context of CreateNYC.
  7. Demonstrate, through course projects, an understanding of fundraising, marketing and audience development, cultural policy and the arts, distribution of the arts, strategic planning, leadership and management, community engagement, and research methodology.
