Event Description:
The CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR) presents the final lecture in our 2017/18 series of demography seminars

Valeria Cetorelli

Demographer and Statistician, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia

"Demographic Evidence of ISIS Genocide Against the Yazidis"

Abstract: On 3 August 2014, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) attacked the region around Mount Sinjar in northwestern Iraq. The region was home to approximately 400,000 Yazidis, the members of an ancient and often-persecuted religious minority. ISIS seized Sinjar City and surrounding villages in a few hours, killing or enslaving the Yazidis who could not flee. Those who could escaped to Mount Sinjar, where they were besieged by ISIS for days, enduring temperatures of over 120 degrees Fahrenheit without access to water, food or shelter. Although ISIS genocidal intent has been ascertained, the extent of the group’s atrocities has long remained murky. In this seminar, Valeria Cetorelli will present estimates of the number of Yazidis killed and enslaved by ISIS and their age and gender characteristics. The estimates are based on a retrospective household survey across 13 camps for internally displaced persons in Iraqi Kurdistan, where the majority of Sinjar’s surviving Yazidis now live. Such documentation provides important information for humanitarian assistance and protection, supports accountability in national and international courts and tribunals, and serves as a historical record for recovery and reconciliation.
