Death and Taxes: The Depletion of a Natural Resource Caused by Europeans in the American Continent
Please join us for the next Weissman Global Seminar featuring
Dean Aldemaro Romero Jr., Weissman School of Arts and Sciences
Interdisciplinary approaches have been used not only to interpret past patterns of natural resource utilization but also to provide useful tools for conservation biology and resource management. I report the depletion of the pearl oyster (Pinctada imbricata) beds off the coasts of the island of Cubagua, Venezuela, in the sixteenth century and the replacement of the oyster by the turkey-wind mussel (Arca zebra). I used historical tax data to conclude that the rapid depletion of this resource was the result not only of overexploitation in a short period of time but also the ecology of the place used by humans to carry out such activity. Under conditions of ecological stress generated by overexploitation, the turkey-wing mussel outcompeted the pearl oyster, thus preventing its recovery. Finally, I propose that the exploitation of the pearl oyster beds directly influenced the demographic, social, and cultural conditions of the indigenous human population in the Caribbean and, to a certain extent, Africa.
Aldemaro Romero Jr. is the Weissman Dean of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College in New York. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Barcelona, Spain and his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami, Florida. He has published more than 1,000 pieces including more than 20 books and monographs. His academic interests range from environmental to evolutionary biology, to history and philosophy of science, to science communication and higher education. He has been awarded numerous grants as well as prizes for his research and science communication work.

In Sonnambula's program, "Women's Voices," the ensemble presents works by, and inspired by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729). Jacquet was a child prodigy, astonishing adults - including King Louis XIV - with her ability to compose and improvise at the keyboard. In addition to keyboard pieces, she composed sonatas, songs, cantatas, and even an opera, the first by a woman to be performed in Paris.
"My goal is to show Jacquet in context, rather than as rogue female composer," says Sonnambula artistic director and viol Elizabeth Weinfield, "to reveal how she was influential to her contemporaries, rather than the other way around, which is so often the narrative. We know she was a very active teacher in Paris, and influence is felt strongly in works by the more well-known male composers." Sonnambula's program features music by Jacquet de La Guerre juxtaposed with works from her contemporaries, including Jean-Baptiste Lully, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Henri Dumont.
Praised as "superb" by The New Yorker, Sonnambula is a Renaissance ensemble that brings to light unknown music for various combinations of early instruments with the lush sound of the viol at the core. Sonnambula has performed at The Frick Collection, Alice Tully Hall, among other venues, and at Princeton University, where they are working at the Princeton Sound Kitchen lab to commission new work for old instruments.

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM | Learning to Play in the Sandbox: Cooperating for Climate Resilience
Part of Climate Week NYC 2017
About the Program
A key conclusion from the book Adapting to Change: The Business of Climate Resilience,
released during Climate Week 2016, is that, to tackle complex
challenges such as climate change, we have to learn to cooperate,
collaborate and generally work better together. No one sector can combat
the threat to our environment. Success requires the partnership of an
untold number of experts from virtually every discipline.
This need to better work together is echoed increasingly throughout
the sustainability community. For instance, at the EPA’s March Climate
Leadership Conference, a discussion on how communities can create a
resilience strategy quickly turned to the need for cities to more
effectively cooperate with the private sector. Despite the wondrous
technologies we humans continue to devise, it seems we still haven’t
learned some basic lessons—like how to play in the sandbox.
The lack of effective collaboration is exacerbated by the fact that
the players in the sandbox are changing. Former climate supporters,
such as the federal government, are stepping back. In their place, are
new environmental advocates including Big Business and the Armed Forces.
While these allies understand the risks of climate deterioration,
we don’t necessarily understand how best to work with one another toward
a common goal.
This panel discussion will bring together representatives from
various sectors - the different kids in the sandbox - in order to elicit
a better understanding of their unique needs, the incentives and
rewards that motivate them and the ways they operate and think. The aim
is to formulate some principles from which we may be better able to
collaborate for climate resilience.

The Heart of Kyogen 2017
September 29, 2017 7PM
BUY TICKETS
The acclaimed Ohkura School Kyogen actors Noriyoshi Ohkura and Daijiro Zenchiku are returning to New York!
Having delighted audiences with their performances and laughter in 2016, this year Mr. Ohkura and Mr. Zenchiku will perform the Kyogen classics, “SHIMIZU” (Spring Water) and “KAGYU” (Snail).
“SHIMIZU” is about a servant who cannot be bothered to get the water needed for a tea ceremony and makes up a story about a demon appearing at the spring...
“SNAIL” tells the improbable events that ensue when a servant agrees to bring back a snail that is an elixir of long life. The servant has no idea what a snail is and assumes a sleeping priest he encounters is the snail he is seeking...
Mr. Ohkura and Mr. Zenchiku will preface the performances with a lecture on the history of Kyogen and demonstrations of Kyogen acting techniques, stage effects, and sound use, making the performance readily accessible to everyone. (The program will be presented in Japanese with English supertitles.)
Kyogen is traditional Japanese comic theater. Kyogen dates back to the 14th century and was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001.
This event is sponsored by the Noh Society, a New York based nonprofit organization promoting Japanese arts and culture, and is supported by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of New York.

About the Program
The emerging legal marijuana business is attracting money and
attention. But what's it like to invest and manage in this industry?
After 30 years on Wall Street, Robert Birnbaum founded and ran one of
the initial four licensed medical marijuana producers in Connecticut.
Join Robert as he describes the progression from “How hard could this
be? It’s a weed!”, to facing surprising challenges, pitfalls, and
opportunities, until finally a successful company emerged. It's a
business like no other, join us to find out why.
About the Speaker
ROBERT
BIRNBAUM'S career has been distinguished by a high degree of creativity
and analysis, combined with excellent communication skills, on Wall
Street and in the emerging Medical Marijuana industry. In all cases, he
has built businesses through in-depth product knowledge, strategic
insight, marketing ability and persistent execution.
Between 2009 and 2013, Robert was a private investor, using Peartree
Trading LLC as his investment vehicle. In 2013, backed by his own
capital and a small group of investors, Robert founded Curaleaf LLC, a
licensed medical marijuana producer in Connecticut. After winning one
of Connecticut’s coveted licenses, Robert served as Chairman and CEO of
Curaleaf for most of its history, until a controlling interest was sold
in March of 2017.
In 2005, Robert co-founded Third Wave Global Investors LLC, a global
macro hedge fund in Greenwich Connecticut, and served as its President,
Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer. He also served
as Director of the Third Wave Global Master Fund until 2009. The firm
grew from a relatively small investment by its principals to over $500
million in assets within three years. Clients included major global
banks, large hedge fund-of-funds, and high net worth individuals.
Robert was responsible for all aspects of the business - marketing,
client service, compliance, finance, operations, and technology. His
successes were featured in Global Custodian magazine.
Prior to Third Wave, Robert served from 2001 to 2004 as Managing
Director and Head of Institutional Distribution and Client Service for
Columbia Management Group (owned by Bank of America), with
responsibility for over $60 billion in assets under management, $200
million in annual revenue, and 300 employees. During his tenure, Robert
integrated 5 separate firms into one coherent sales and marketing
organization, with effective positioning to clients, consultants, and
prospects, and increased sales to over $3 billion annually. He was a
member of Columbia Management’s Operating Committee.
Between 1998 and 2001, he was Managing Director and Head of Marketing
and Global E-Commerce for Credit Suisse Asset Management. Robert was
named an Impact Player of the Year by Defined Contribution News, an
Institutional Investor publication. He was a member of the Management
Committee of CSAM-Americas.
From 1988 to 1998, Robert held a variety of posts at J.P. Morgan
Investment Management, culminating in Managing Director and Head of
Defined Contribution, and received industry recognition for his
innovations. He grew the business at an annual compound rate of 40% to
$120 million in annual revenue. Much of his time at Morgan was spent
building and leading the non-sales Marketing group, which focused on
product development and product positioning across all channels. In
this role, Robert was recognized for leveraging the overall business
globally, including into new markets.
Robert began his career in the investment management business with
The Vanguard Group, where he was the Senior Product Manager responsible
for fund development and retirement plans.
Robert holds an A.B. from Columbia University, and an M.B.A., with Distinction, in Finance from Wharton.

Matuto’s Seductive Philosophical Trip through Brazilian Beats and Southern Roots:
In Brazil, Matuto is slang for Country Boy, but this NYC based group of urbanized virtuosos is emerging as one of the world’s hottest international touring acts. Recently awarded the title of “American Musical Ambassadors” by the U.S. State Department, Matuto has been hailed as "seductively cross cultural" (Chicago Tribune), and praised as "the height of world music sophistication” (Sun Times).
Matuto’s songs can sway hips just as easily as spark insights. On stage, the instruments swirl together, bobbing in and out, whirling around the tension at the core of Matuto’s music: the push and pull between the Latin syncopations of Brazilian music and the folk traditions of the American South. It’s Bluegrass meets Brazil. It’s an unlikely combination on paper, but on the dance floor, it just feels right.

"As reimagined by Ms. Bauman, this story of exiles in love and in conflict becomes a meditation on immigrants and refugees today…an approach that might well have warmed the heart of that prescient champion of multiculturalism in the arts – Joseph Papp.”- Ben Brantley, The New York Times
65 Million Displaced People. All the World is Arden
Right now, we face the worst refugee crisis since World War II. Yet our national conversation about it is paralyzed – caught between overwhelming statistics of misery on one side, and nativist fear-mongering on the other. As attempts to respond to the crisis descend into acrimony and chaos, perhaps the only way to escape this paralysis is through stories that connect us to its human dimensions.
Arden/Everywhere re-imagines Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” as a story about refugees. It unlocks this beloved comedy’s deepest heartbeat to tell a distinctly contemporary story – one that looks into a world of dislocation and exile to discover resilience, reconciliation and love. Performed by a diverse cast of actors whose origins extend from Russia to Liberia to Sri Lanka to Ohio, it unleashes theater’s unique ability to awaken empathy, locating our common humanity in the face of a seemingly incomprehensible global catastrophe.

Workshop On Blockchain Technology
October 26, 12:45 to 2:15 pm and October 27, 10 am to 1:00 pm at Baruch College,
135 Easy 22nd Street, Administration Building, Room 301
Open to all CUNY Faculty and Students.
Vugranam Sreedhar, IBM, will lead the workshop
More than half of the world’s largest companies are now researching blockchain technologies with the goal of integrating them into their products. Leading companies across the global food supply chain have formed a blockchain collaboration with IBM intended to strengthen consumer confidence in the global food system. The consortium includes Dole, Driscoll’s, Golden State Foods, Kroger, McCormick and Company, McLane Company, Nestlé, Tyson Foods, Unilever and Walmart, who will work together to identify new areas where the global supply chain can benefit from blockchain. (https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/53013.wss). Projects are already underway that will disrupt the management of health care records, property titles, supply chains, and even our online identities.
The workshop will provide an overview of blockchain both from business commerce point of view and from technology point of view. From a technology point of view blockchain can be viewed as a computational model made up of five different architectural components:
• Transaction processing
• Smart contracts
• Shared Ledger
• Distributed consensus
• Cryptography and security protocols

12:00 PM - 2:30 PM | Giving Voice To Values: The "How" of Business Ethics
About the Program
Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity as we welcome Mary C. Gentile for the Fall 2017 HSBC Student Series on Ethics and Accountability. Dr. Gentile’s talk is entitled Giving Voice To Values: The "How" of Business Ethics.
Dr. Gentile will share a ground-breaking new approach to preparing
business managers and leaders for values-driven decision making. Drawing
on both the actual experience of business practitioners as well as
cutting edge research, GIVING VOICE TO VALUES (GVV) fills a
long-standing and critical gap in our understanding of how to enable
ethical practice. Rather than a focus on ethical analysis, GVV focuses on ethical implementation and asks the question: “What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?”
GVV was
launched by The Aspen Institute and Yale School of Management, with
interim support at Babson College, and is now based at University of
Virginia Darden School of Business. Developed by Gentile, a veteran of
Harvard Business School and pioneer in both ethics and diversity
management curriculum, GVV is now being piloted in over 995 educational
and executive settings. Giving Voice to Values holds the
promise to transform the foundational assumptions upon which the
teaching of business ethics is based, and importantly, to equip future
business leaders to not only know what is right — but how to make it
happen.
About the Speaker
Mary C. Gentile, PhD, is
Creator/Director of Giving Voice to Values, Professor of Practice at the
University of Virginia Darden School of Business, Senior Advisor at the
Aspen Institute Business & Society Program, and consultant on
management education and leadership development. Among numerous other
awards, Mary was named as one of the 2015 "100 Most Influential in
Business Ethics" by Ethisphere,
one of the "Top Thought Leaders in Trust: 2015 Lifetime Achievement
Award Winners" by Trust Across America-Trust Around the World, January
2015 and just this year was named one of the "Top Minds 2017" in ethics
leadership by ComplianceWeek.
Giving Voice to Values, a pioneering business curriculum for
values-driven leadership, has been featured in publications such as, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, Stanford Social Innovation Review, McKinsey Quarterly and piloted in over 995 business schools and organizations globally. The award winning book is Giving Voice To Values: How To Speak Your Mind When You Know What's Right,
with translations in Chinese, Spanish and forthcoming in Korean. Mary
has authored numerous books and articles and partnered with Nomadic.fm
in 2014 to launch six online interactive social cohort-based modules around Giving Voice To Values.
While at Harvard Business School from 1985-1995, Mary held various
positions as a faculty member, case writer and manager of case research
and was one of the principal architects of HBS's Leadership, Ethics and
Corporate Responsibility curriculum. Among numerous other books, cases
and articles, Mary co-authored Can Ethics Be Taught? Perspectives, Challenges, and Approaches
at Harvard Business School and was Content Expert for the award-winning
interactive CD-ROM, Managing Across Differences (HBS Publishing).
Mary earned her Bachelor's degree from The College of William and
Mary and her MA and PhD from State University of New York-Buffalo.
The HSBC Student Series: Bringing today’s ethical challenges to tomorrow’s business leaders
The HSBC Student Series on Ethics and Accountability is a four-part
discussion focused on a broad range of current ethical issues in
business, finance, government, law, and society. The programs are
designed by expert faculty to increase student engagement in business
ethics matters. On behalf of Baruch College, the Robert Zicklin Center
for Corporate Integrity thanks HSBC for its generous support.
