"Correlation or causation: What is the actual relationship between education and health?"

Abstract: While a large body of literature has documented associations between education and health in low and middle-income countries, an assessment of causal links based on experimental and quasi-experimental evidence is lacking. Through a systematic literature review, this study is exploring: 1) whether a causal link exists between education and health; 2) how that relationship differs by education exposure and health outcome; and 3) the causal mechanisms underlying linkages. Education exposures include grade attainment, age at school leaving, school enrollment, and learning. Health outcomes include contraceptive use; age at first sex, marriage, pregnancy and birth; fertility; STIs; maternal mortality/morbidity; infant and child mortality, child growth faltering, and malaria. The search identified 2059 articles for screening. After abstract and full text review, we identified 37 papers that met our inclusion criteria. During this presentation, we will summarize the evidence on causal linkages between education and health, and provide research and policy recommendations.
