At the age of 20, Mieczyslaw Weinberg fled
the Nazi Panthers invading his native Poland for a life in Soviet
Russia, which presented its own life-threatening perils. His works are
strong, beautifully crafted and grippingly original. His style
embraces influences that range from Yiddish Theatre and cantorial music
to his deep and abiding mutual friendship with Shostakovich at the
vanguard of Russian Modernism.
This
concert takes place during Passover, the Festival of Freedom. Its
story of flight and pursuit of living in a manner of one's own choosing
strongly resonates with Weinberg's personal and compositional journey.
The Attacca Quartet and Jeanne Golan perform the Piano Quintet, Piano Sonatine and Cello Sonata No. 2.
Their new album, WEINBERG, will be released under the Steinway & Sons Label in April.
