1972 did not see adoption of the ERA, but it did see passage of Title IX of the Higher Education Act. On the 50th Anniversary of this historic legislation, we will be joined by Jay Berman ‘59 and Professor Sonia Jarvis.

Jay Berman, Indiana Senator Bayh’s Chief of Staff drafted the Title IX legislation. Two years later, Sonia Jarvis, Stanford women’s varsity basketball player visited the Athletic Director, weekly, asking for access to a regulation sized court, same as the men’s team. Mr. Berman and Professor Jarvis will be in conversation about the politics underlying the passage of Title IX; what it accomplished; and how much further we must go to ensure that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
