“The Effect of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on the Educational Attainment of Undocumented Youth: Evidence from a Large Urban Public University”

Abstract: The estimated 250,000 undocumented immigrants currently enrolled in college share a common dream with their legal status counterparts: that higher education will be a vehicle for social mobility. Yet the reality is that undocumented students face many barriers to their graduation because of their lack of legal status. In June 2012, President Obama enacted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which provides relief from deportation, and renewable work permits to eligible undocumented youth. While the early evidence suggests that DACA has improved the economic condition of undocumented immigrants and their families, the effect on educational attainment is unknown. This paper uses administrative data on students attending a large public university to estimate the effect of DACA on undocumented students’ educational outcomes. A unique feature of the data is that they accurately identify legal status. Results from regression discontinuity design indicate that an unintentional consequence of DACA is that it lowers the educational attainment of undocumented college students.
