As a minority religion in the country, the Ghanaian Jews must practice their religion in isolation. Up until 1975, the group of people in the remote Ghana village of Sefwi Wiawaso practicing Jewish customs and prayers did not realize that they were Jewish. Considered to be descendants from one of the lost tribes of Israel, the Sefwi Jews have been practicing their traditions for centuries among the majority Christian and Muslim populations of Ghana. The Sefwi’s private way of living is showcased in this documentary while also raising questions about Jewish identity such as, “What comprises a Jew?” and “Do you have to be part of an accepted Jewish community to be considered Jewish?” The film documents the efforts of the Sefwi Jews to connect with their own community as well as other Jews worldwide.
