COVID-19 has had marked effects on the Western Hemisphere. As of November 5, five of the top ten countries in per capita COVID-19 cases are in the Americas. They include the United States, Panama, Peru, Chile, and Argentina which all have between 26,000 and 32,000 cases per million inhabitants. Within the Western Hemisphere, however, the maritime Caribbean, the islands that run from Cuba, ninety middles from the US, to Trinidad and Tobago, 7 miles from the coast of Venezuela, have significantly lower rates of infection. Jamaica has recorded 3400 cases per million inhabitants, Trinidad report 4600 per million, Barbados 901, and Haiti 808. The Dominican Republic has 12,759 per million, higher but still far from other regional and global leaders. Despite these relatively low COVID-19 case rates, the Caribbean has experienced significant economic consequences as a result of the global decline in travel and tourism. This has led to important social challenges as unemployment, hunger, and domestic violence have increased especially among the lower income population. This panel will discuss the scope of the COVID-19 epidemic in the Caribbean, government strategies to contain the epidemic, and the effects that the epidemic has had on the region's economy and society.
