THE SCARLET LETTER, adapted from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne by Phyllis Nagy. This contemporary stage adaptation of the classic novel set in Puritan times, deals with issues that make it almost a feminist deconstruction of the novel while preserving the familiar story of Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale. Christopher Scott directs Baruch Actors in a production reflecting this 1994 adaptation of an 1850 novel set in 1640s colonial Boston for today’s audience. Basic story: 1642 Boston. Hester Prynne, gifted seamstress has a baby out of wedlock, refuses to name the man who fathered her child, Pearl, is shunned and condemned to wear a scarlet letter “A” until she does.
