Event Description:
The CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR) presents the first in our 2017/18 series of demography seminars

Dr. Yao Lu
Associate Professor of Sociology
Faculty Affiliate - Columbia Population Research Center (CPRC), Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI), Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP), and Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) at Columbia University

"The Patterns and Economic Returns to Job Mobility by Race/Ethnicity and Immigration Status in the United States"

Abstract: The U.S. labor markets have witnessed two trends: job mobility has increased and the labor market has become increasingly diverse along the lines of race/ethnicity and nativity. The present study seeks to integrate the two trends and examine how the rate of job mobility (defined as change of employer) and wage return to job mobility vary by race/ethnicity and nativity. Data are from four panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation between 1996 and 2011. Results based on growth curve modeling suggest that ethnic minorities and immigrants have different experiences from the native-born white population.

We will meet at NOON to have lunch with the speaker, please RSVP to ensure an appropriate catering headcount.

The talk will begin at 12:30pm.

CIDR fellows and Demography Certificate students are strongly encouraged to meet with the speaker after the seminar to discuss her work further and consult about graduate school, research, job market, career, etc.
