This series of 6 masterclasses by art historians will connect world cultures with the fine arts, to see if we can find an alternate way to become globally-accomplished students. For Baruch students who wish to in order to operate at the highest echelons of business and industry, a working knowledge of art history and culture will be indispensable.
Matteo Bellucci, PhD candidate in art history at the CUNY Grad Center, takes us to Mughal India with a discussion on power and legitimacy expressed through visual art.
"Multivalence in the Architecture and Decoration of Shah Jahan's Jharokha at Delhi's Red Fort"
The jharokha at the Red Fort palace in Delhi, India, is one of the most symbolically charged architectural commissions of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628-1658). The emperor built this distinctive balcony inside his palace to provide a dramatic setting for his appearances before his subjects. This lecture focuses on the jharokha’s most conspicuous features: its semi-precious stone inlay decoration with plaques imported from Florence and its unusual canopied structure. Considering both Florentine and local Mughal traditions, art historian Matteo Bellucci analyzes this cross-cultural exchange to show how the jharokha's visual forms and materials helped legitimize the imperial rule of Shah Jahan by communicating his authority.

The Discussion
Facial recognition technology is phenomenal: It makes it possible to track and identify individuals in new, unprecedented ways. Even though this technology has many benefits, such as supporting law enforcement, it also poses serious privacy concerns.
In what ways are commercial firms, government organizations, and the general public using facial recognition? What are the most beneficial and damaging uses of this technology? What are the key regulatory challenges? Considering how rapidly facial recognition technology is developing, how quickly must we establish meaningful policies to guide its applications?

12:00 PM - 2:20 PM | Chatting with the Future: Exploring the Legal and Ethical Challenges of ChatGPT and Generative AI
About the Program
Last November, OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT, a free chatbot that creates text using AI technology. Although its output is not perfect, ChatGPT has already demonstrated remarkable abilities, such as passing exams from law, business, and medical schools. Its text-generation capabilities have also been used for simpler tasks such as to writing Shakespearean sonnets, discussing complicated topics, and composing heartfelt love songs. As the hype around ChatGPT continues to grow, new ethical concerns are emerging about the development and use of AI tools.
In this fireside chat, Professor Yafit Lev-Aretz and Professor Nizan Packin will discuss the current state of ethics in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the importance of responsible AI in today’s society. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in the discussion, ask questions, and share their own experiences and perspectives on the ethical considerations of ChatGPT.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place on March 16th at Baruch College. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the ethics of ChatGPT and join the conversation on responsible AI!
This program is a part of Baruch College’s Ethics Week

The tech ethics program is designed to increase awareness of such ethical dilemmas and foster a conversation on the positive and negative impacts of technology. The program also aims to equip future leaders with the insights and perspectives needed to make complex decisions about the use of technology in business and society.
Professor Lev-Aretz is a tech policy expert, researching the fascinating relationship between the law, technology, and society. She has written about information privacy, the growing use of algorithmic decision-making, intrusive means of news dissemination, choice architecture in the age of big data, and the ethical challenges posed by machine learning and artificially intelligent systems. CUNY, invites you to a special evening with writer, poet, translator and
journalist
Achy Obejas, in conversation with Dr. Rick Rodriguez
(Department of English, Baruch College), part of our Discovering
Crypto-Jewish Identities

Newman Vertical Campus
Engelman Recital Hall, BPAC

Achy
Obejas is the author of Boomerang/Bumerán, an unique and inspiring
bilingual collection of poetry written in a bold, mostly gender-free
English and Spanish that addresses immigration, displacement, love and
activism. She also authored The Tower of the Antilles, which was a
PEN/Faulkner finalist, among other honors. Her novels include Ruins and
Days of Awe, which was a Los Angeles Times Best Books of the Year. Her
poetry chapbook, This is What Happened in Our Other Life, was both a
critical hit and a national best-seller. As a translator, Havana-born
Achy has worked with Wendy Guerra, Rita Indiana, Junot Díaz and Megan
Maxwell, among others. A recipient of a USA Artists fellowship, an NEA
and a Cintas fellowship, among other awards, she lives in the San
Francisco Bay area. She was one of the organizers of the #15novCuba
Poesiá Sin Fin 2021 marathon in support of change in Cuba.
Days
of Awe, Achy Obejas's second novel and third book of fiction, centers on
its Cuban American protagonist's discovery of her family's concealed
Jewishness: On New Year’s Day, 1959, Alejandra San José was born in
Havana, entering the world through the heart of revolution. Fearing the
turmoil brewing in Cuba, her parents took Ale and fled to the shores of
North America–ending up in Chicago amid a close community of Cuban
refugees. As an adult, Ale becomes an interpreter, which takes her back
to her homeland for the first time.
There, she makes her way back
through San José history, uncovering new fragments of truth about the
relatives who struggled with their own identities so long ago. For the
San Josés, ostensibly Catholics, are actually Jews. They are conversos
who converted to Christianity during the Spanish Inquisition. As
Alejandra struggles to confront what it is to be Cuban and American,
Catholic and Jewish, she translates her father’s troubling youthful
experiences into the healing language of her own heart. |
