Join the Mishkin Gallery in celebrating Dr. May Joseph’s new publication, Sea Log: Indian Ocean to New York, published by Routledge in 2019. Offering a feminist account of sea journeys from the Malabar Coast of South India, through the Atlantic to the North Sea, Joseph writes a navigational history of postcolonial coastal displacements. Excavating Dutch, Portuguese, Arab, Asian and African influences along the Malabar Coast, she unearths the undertow of colonialism’s ruins. Joseph is the Founder of Harmattan Theater, and Professor of Global Studies at Pratt Institute. Other publications by Joseph include Ghosts of Lumumba (2020), Fluid New York: Cosmopolitan Urbanism and the Green Imagination (2013), and Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship (1999).
