Nocturnes
Dialogue on Art Making and Memory with Rosalyn Engelman
featuring Rosalyn Engelman, Ted Altschuler, Paul Lewis and David Shimoni
Join us for an evening with visual artist, Rosalyn Engelman, as we explore her life and creative process through film, music, and conversation. The 70-minute program includes the documentary film Rosalyn Engelman: The Color of Memory, the artist in conversation with BPAC director Ted Altschuler, and Nocturnes by Chopin, Faure and Lowell Liebermann performed by pianist David Shimoni. At the end, join us for a toast to the triptych Nocturnes, which Rosalyn Engelman generously donated to BPAC.
About Rosalyn Engelman:
Rosalyn Engelman is a painter, sculptor and installation artist. She works with a variety of materials, including outdated and discarded electronic equipment, mannequins, nails and barbed wire, and produces art with a striking range of expressive content….In all her work, Engelman is searching for beauty, hope and transcendence. Her art is ultimately about the indomitable human spirit-the will to create in a world where devastation is a dominant theme of life. Her art comes from the belief that communication, especially through art and creativity, is a key source of redemption.
About Paul Lewis:
Paul Lewis is the Principal at Subterracon films, a media production company based in Virginia, USA, which looks to produce strong, unique cinematic content for a global audience. Along with his short film Rosalyn Engelman: The Color of Memory, he has also just released his first feature-length documentary, It Was the Nightingale: The Unreliable Story of Ford Madox Ford, on which he is Producer and Director. Prior to his work with Subterracon, he was the founder and Executive Director of the Fredericksburg Athenaeum and the Rappahannock Independent Film Festival.
About Ted Altschuler:
Ted Altschuler is the Director of Baruch Performing Arts Center and for 30 years, has worked with nonprofit organizations and higher learning institutions to connect the public to culture. His programs have integrated performing arts and community, promoted conversations in the literary arts, and increased public understanding of science. Positions have included Artistic Director of Clavis Theatre Ensemble (Milwaukee) and Associate Director of Mint Theatre (New York), as well as having directed over 45 plays and opera, taught on the faculty of The Julliard School, and earned a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from the Graduate Center CUNY.
About David Shimoni:
First-prize winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Auditions, pianist David Shimoni has performed extensively throughout the United States. Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Mr. Shimoni attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in high school, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College, and obtained masters degrees in both solo and collaborative performance from the Juilliard School. He completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
