Event Description:

Gabrielle Le Roux & Victor Mukasa

A talk and video screening by artist and activist Gabrielle Le Roux and Ugandan human rights defender Victor Mukasa increasing visibility of trans and intersex African and Turkish activists through an art intervention.

During this presentation Le Roux and Mukasa will discuss the process of co-creating this work with ten trans (and one intersex) activists from Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Burundi, and Botswana. Mukasa will talk about the history and emergence of the trans movement in Africa and provide an update on what is happening in Uganda now, Le Roux will talk about the combination of politics and creativity in the creation process and content of the work. The videos Proudly African & Transgender and Proudly Trans in Turkey will be screened.

Baruch Performing Arts Center presents GenderFluid, a weeklong festival of performance, film, and art by transgender and genderfluid artists, Sept. 9-13. Featured performers include Emmy-nominated Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, performance artist and Gender Outlaw author Kate Bornstein, Andy Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn, stand-up comedian Ian Harvie, and more.
