Event Description:

The Cost of Cyber-Insecurity

A talk with Joel Van Dyk, Deputy CISO and Chief of Application Security, The London Stock Exchange Group

Mr. Van Dyk will discuss current best practices and what leading organizations are doing in order to protect themselves.  He will also highlight the potential risks and costs associated with not having a good cybersecurity plan in place.

This program is presented by Baruch College’s Wasserman Trading Floor in the Subotnick Financial Services Center and Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity.


 Joel Van Dyk joined The London Stock Exchange Group as Deputy CISO and Chief of Application Security this October. Previously, Joel worked at Convergex where he was responsible for the company's information security  and IT risk management programs.

Mr. Van Dyk has a broad background in infrastructure and applications development, acquired at some of the leading financial business in the country, including Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, and Deutsche Bank. While at Deutsche Bank, Joel was a part of the team that installed the first 5ESS Central Office Switch on Wall Street, and was a member of the award-winning Client Services Workstation team. Later, at JPMorgan Asset Management, he built the group's first Internet infrastructure and information security group.

As the Senior Technology Architect at Deutsche Bank Investment Banking, he played a leading role in designing their applications and after 9/11 he was a key contributor in rebuilding investment banking's infrastructure. Before joining Convergex, Joel spent eight years at Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation where he was the Chief Information Security Architect. During that time, Mr. Van Dyk was responsible for several designs including an alternate lightweight authentication method, the implementation of DTCC's cloud-related security controls, and created and implemented the security infrastructure for  

Mr. Van Dyk completed his graduate studies in Physics at NYU and is a graduate of Lafayette College where he majored in Physics and German. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi and holds CISSP and CISM certifications.
