About the Program:
The Islamic financial industry plays an ever increasing role in the global economy. Assets in the amount of USD 800 billion are estimated to be under Islamic management today, with projections reaching USD 4 trillion by 2020. The industry has experienced 15% annual growth over the last ten years. There are 300 Islamic banks and investments firms operating in over 70 countries. Despite its importance, many American business professionals and students do not understand how Islamic finance functions and are ill prepared to conduct business in the Islamic World. Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity and the Baruch College Muslim Student Association as we explore how American businesses successfully navigate the world of Islamic finance and operate in predominately Muslim nations.

Our guest Omar Wohabe, President, Arab Bankers Association of North America will partake in an evening Q&A with RZCCI Director David Rosenberg. Mr. Wohabe will discuss his experiences advising governmental, institutional and private clients from the Arab Gulf in connection with their investments in private equity, venture capital and real estate, both on a conventional and Islamic basis, and their commercial transactions in the United States. The discussion will be followed by a networking reception. About the Speaker Omar Wohabe is a partner of Wohabe Law Offices LLP, in New York. The firm was established in 1971 to serve private-sector and public-sector clients from the Arab Gulf with respect to diverse domestic and international transactions and activities, and clients from other jurisdictions with respect to their business interests in the Gulf. Mr. Wohabe represents such clients principally in connection with investments in private equity, venture capital, real estate and other commercial transactions. Portions of these transactions are made in conformity with Islamic law. He also routinely advises clients on matters relating to fund formation and capital market transactions, and serves as outside general counsel to clients, generally in connection with investment transactions and commercial assignments, but also with respect to litigation, regulatory and compliance matters in the United States and Arab Gulf jurisdictions. Mr. Wohabe is the President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Arab Bankers Association of North America (“ABANA”).

He regularly organizes and presents at private and public conferences on the subject of Islamic investing and other topics of interest to Gulf investors. Mr. Wohabe graduated from Williams College (B.A., 1985) and Cornell Law School (J.D., 1988), and is admitted to practice in New York. Co-Sponsor The Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) general objectives are as follows: (a) Facilitate prayer space use for Muslim students attending Baruch College. (b) Encourage and facilitate the general practice of Islam on campus. (c) Promote awareness of Islam among the Baruch community. (d) Act as a representative for the Muslim community on Campus.
