Colombia’s Move to the Left:  The New Politics of the Petro Administration

Gustavo Petro was elected president of Colombia on June 9th, 2022. Mr. Petro’s presidency represents a remarkable trajectory in his life and a potentially important inflection point in Colombian politics. Mr. Petro was an active member of the M-19 guerrilla movement during the 1980s. After leaving the armed struggle he served several terms in Colombia’s congress and was elected mayor of Bogotá, the country’s capital. He is Colombia’s first leftist president, and his election opens up a host of questions and possibilities for that country’s politics, society, and economy.

This session will discuss the first several months of Mr. Petro’s presidency examining the evolving nature of conflict and violence there, the government’s peace and drug policies, engagement with regional partners including Panamá, Venezuela, and the United States, as well as the government’s emerging energy and economic policies.

Moderator: Enrique Desmond Arias, professor, Marxe Chair of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ausitn W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, Baruch College, City University of New York
