Baruch College Receives Top Rankings in Social Mobility in Most Comprehensive Study Yet Conducted

Ranks #5 and #9 in Key Indices of Big Data Study

New York, NY - January 20, 2017 - The Opportunity of Equality Project, the most comprehensive study yet conducted on college graduates, measured social mobility through the use of “big data to identify new pathways to upward mobility.” Conducted by a team of economists from Stanford University, the study tracked 30 million students born between 1980 and 1991, linking tax returns to attendance records from nearly every college in the country.

Baruch College placed in the top 10 of two key indices of social mobility in the study’s report:

  • Ranked #5 among colleges with the highest mobility rate from the bottom 40 percent to the top 40 percent.
  • Ranked #9 on the list of the top ten schools for upward mobility with 79 percent of students coming from the bottom fifth of the income distribution and moving to the top three fifths upon attaining their college degree

Additionally, the City University of New York (CUNY) system, where Baruch College is a senior college, overall placed third in social mobility with 7.2 percent of students moving from the bottom fifth to the top fifth of income distribution. CUNY joins Cal -State Los Angeles and SUNY Stony Brook in the top three.

According to the study, Baruch College has a very small share of students in the top one percent with 1.6 percent coming from that income bracket. It reported that 46.7 percent of Baruch students were from families earning less than $65,000 per year.

Welcome to the website for the Office of the Provost. Here you will find information on academic policies, special academic programs, student affairs, faculty resources that support innovation, and faculty development opportunities.

The title of ‘provost’ has a variety of historical and linguistic roots, but in essence, the provost is the chief operating officer, reporting to and acting as an extension of the president. In this role, I work with the deans of the schools, continuing education, academic programs, faculty development, and student affairs. I also work with the vice presidents to ensure that the needs of our faculty and students are met with the resources we have available in our College. Finally, I coordinate with provosts from other units of CUNY to ensure that the university meets its goals and is faithful to its mission.

Baruch is a truly unique College within CUNY, with a tradition for academic excellence in all of our disciplines, and the unique identity of the largest accredited business degree programs in the United States. Ours is a current manifestation of a CUNY legacy of providing degree programs that are simultaneously reflective and instrumental, enabling young New Yorkers to begin satisfying careers that contribute to their personal development, to their families, and to build healthy and resilient communities.

Mission of the Office

The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Baruch College works in concert with the Faculty, Department Chairs, the Deans of the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Public Affairs, as well as the Division of Student Affairs to achieve excellence in all aspects of the academic life of the College, including research, student learning and engagement, and building an academic community that is a source of inspiration and pride. Additionally, the Office of the Provost is deeply involved in faculty recruitment, retention, and promotion; in the development and assessment of academic programs; and in assisting the faculty in compliance within the regulatory environment of government and our labor contracts.

Essential to our mission is the development of our students as thoughtful learners, ethical and engaged citizens, and confident adults, who choose to build healthy and sustainable communities through their families and organizations. These efforts are realized and supported by the Division of Student Affairs through carefully planned developmental opportunities and engaging initiatives that promote student learning, academic integrity, leadership, and success.
