Declaring a Liberal Arts Major

Eligibility Review for Your Chosen Major

Read the following instructions carefully and complete the Eligibility Form before you reach your 60th credit at the college. This form enables the College to determine your eligibility to pursue the major of your choice.

In order to meet the eligibility requirements, you must:

  • be currently enrolled in Baruch College
  • meet the specific requirements of your chosen major
  • have an overall GPA of at least 2.0
  • select a Tier III Minor in addition to your intended major.

Be sure you have taken the time to explore the fields of study you plan to select before completing this form. Think about your interests, your strengths, and your values.

The Process

By now, you will have read about the requirements for pursuing your chosen major on the department's web page. These requirements will vary in terms of course prerequisites, earned GPA, and number of credits you must earn before applying. If you believe that you have met ALL criteria, click here.

After you have submitted your application, you will be notified as to whether or not you have met the eligibility requirements to pursue that major.

  • If you are not accepted because you have not met all the entrance requirements for that major, you must complete those requirements before reapplying.
  • If you are not accepted because you are ineligible, speak with a department faculty advisor or see an advisor in the Dean's or Associate Dean's office.

Once your eligibility has been verified, you will be contacted about meeting with a faculty advisor. Faculty advisors will provide you with information on course selection and opportunities in your field and answer your questions. Be sure to review the degree requirements for your chosen major and minor as outlined in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

  • If you are deemed eligible for a major in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, you must meet with a faculty advisor in that major as soon as possible in order for your major selection to be made official. (Meeting with a faculty advisor is not required for declaring the Tier III Minor.)
  • Check the deadline date that appears on the form before submitting it. Allow at least two weeks after the deadline before expecting to receive a response to your request via your Baruch WebMail.
  • Only currently matriculated Baruch students should fill out this application. If you are not yet a student at Baruch College and wish to apply, you need to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Double or Dual Majors

Weissman School of Arts and Sciences students wishing to complete double or dual majors within the arts and sciences disciplines must file two separate major/specialization forms, each with the appropriate department advisor's signature approving courses are listed on it. The Office of the Associate Dean then approves the two major forms. A minimum of 60 percent of credits in each major field must be completed at Baruch College. (Please note that the two disciplines chosen must be within Weissman.)

The double or dual majors will appear on a student's transcript only if the courses listed on both forms are completed at the time of graduation. Students who desire to combine two disciplines in a single major should consider the Arts and Sciences ad hoc major option. Students who desire to combine a discipline at Baruch College with another at a different senior college should consider the CUNY BA option.

Students who fulfill the requirements of two separate majors are not required to complete a Tier III Minor.

Students may earn a second baccalaureate degree provided they complete 30 additional credits at Baruch, meet all the requirements for the Baruch BA degree, and choose an entirely new major. None of the courses in the second major can have previously been applied to the major.

Major/Specialization Forms

Students seeking admission to the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences must complete the online Eligibility Review of Your Major Form to declare their intended major and Tier III Minor. Students may take this first step as soon as they have established a 2.0 or higher grade point average.

Every student who is admitted to the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences is also required file a Major/Specialization Form (pdf). This should be done before the end of the junior year. The form is filled out in consultation with a faculty advisor in the major department. Major/Specialization Forms signed by the faculty advisors are submitted by the major department to the Office of the Associate Dean for school approval.
