MINGUS LIVES ON

The Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of the late, great jazz composer and bassist, Charles Mingus. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band has performed every Thursday night since 1991 at the "The Fez"' under the Time Cafe in New York City's East Village. The Mingus Big Band has toured extensively in Europe and the United States and has four recordings to its credit, two of which have been 1996 and 1997 Grammy nominees and NAIRD Indie Award winners. The band has been featured on JazzSet with Branford Marsalis, and has appeared under the category "Best Big Band" for three years running in both JazzTimes and Downbeat magazines.

Charles Mingus' music continues to grow in popularity. At the 197 Grammy Awards ceremony, Mingus posthumously received NARA's Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1993 Mingus became the first African-American to have his works acquired by the Library of Congress. His face appears on a US postage stamp, and his spirit looms over the Mingus Big Band wherever they perform.
