Charles SimicSection SY3/SY3H will be taught by the U.S. Poet Laureate Charles Simic, author of 20 books of poetry, seven books of essays, a memoir, and numerous books of translations of French, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Slovenian poetry. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Mr. Simic will be on campus as the Spring 2008 Sidney Harman Writer-in-Residence.

This workshop will combine discussion of students’ poems with extensive readings in poetry that deals with city life. We will study the work of Whitman, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Lorca, Crane, Williams, Bishop and many others, as we try to understand the immense and radical changes that have taken place in poetry over the last hundred and fifty years. Individual conferences with the instructor.
