PHILOSOPHICAL FORUM, A QUARTERLY JOURNAL FOUNDED BY: MARX WARTOFSKY EDITOR: WILLIAM JAMES EARLE This journal, published since 1968, is well known in the philosophical community, especially, though not exclusively, for its openness to applied contexts of philosophy and its encouragement of innovative approaches to philosophy. It has been in the charge of Baruch faculty, with the cooperation of the philosophy department and the College, since it was brought here by its editor Prof. Marx Wartofsky, when he was appointed in 1983 as a Baruch faculty member. At that time Prof. William Earle became an associate editor, working in that capacity continuously until 1998 when he succeeded Prof. Wartofsky as editor in chief. Through Prof. Earle's efforts the journal became associated with Blackwell Publishing Co. It is financially self supporting, based on its subscriptions and sales. It has over 500 institutional subscriptions, in all the major University and College libraries, as well as individual subscriptions and bookstore sales. Although the journal publishes in the usual areas of cutting edge philosophical research, it has regularly published special issues of contemporary studies on topics of current interest, e.g. on "African American Perspectives and Philosophical Traditions," (subsequently published by Routledge as a book), and also on the Holocaust, on Latin American Philosophy, on Apartheid, on Women and Philosophy, on Islamic Philosophy, on Sociobiology. as well as special issues on major contemporary philosophers, e.g. Lucien Goldman, Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, and classic figures such as Kant, Fichte, Feuerbach, Gramsci and the Left-Hegelians. This is a highly respected journal, with a submission rate of 100 to 150 articles a year and an acceptance rate of 5-10%. |
