MARX WARTOFSKY MEMORIAL LECTURE AND ESSAY CONTEST:

Since the spring of 1998 the department has held a memorial lecture and essay competition in honor of our deceased distinguished professor Marx W. Wartofsky. Each year two prizes of $200 are awarded for the best essay in an introductory and an upper division course. They are awarded at a ceremony that features a speaker who addresses a topic within the interests of Professor Wartofsky. The first year Prof. Yuriko Saito spoke on "The Beauty and Fragility of Existence: A Japanese Perspective." In 1999 Prof. John Pittman of John Jay College spoke on "Marx's Feuerbach." This has become an annual event; the third annual lecture and essay competition are in the planning stage at this time and will be held in spring 2000.
