Debra Popkin

Debra Popkin , Vice President of the Metropolitan Chapter of AATF (American Association of Teachers of French), is co-author with Bourbon and Sawicki of Trésors Littéraires: Initiation à la littérature française et francophone (McGraw-Hill, 1999). Among her articles on pedagogy is "Teaching Language through Literature at the Early Stages," published in French Review (Oct.1997). Her literary research centers on Twentieth century French drama and Francophone literature of Africa and the Caribbean. Her article "Torn between Three Continents: The Search for Identity in Maryse Condé’s Une Saison à Rihata and Myriam Warner-Vieyra’s Juletane," was published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology in August 2001. Currently she is writing on the themes of exile, return, madness and love in the works of Caribbean novelist Gisele Pineau . Debra Popkin received Baruch’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988. She was recently awarded the title: Chevalière dans l’ordre des palmes académiques by French Government, in recognition of her efforts to promote French language and culture.
